Happy spring equinox, friends! The spring equinox marks the transition from winter to spring – the coming of the spring season. To celebrate, I’m bringing you a spring equinox yoga practice, as well as four other ways you can align with this seasonal shift.
The word equinox comes from the Latin for “equal night”, and we have to of them during the year – the spring and fall equinoxes.
The equinoxes are the points of balance between the two solstices: the Summer Solstice, when the days are longest, and the Winter Solstice, when the nights are longest.
At the spring and fall equinox, day and night are of equal length: 12 hours each. As such, it is a time to focus on and celebrate balance.
The spring equinox is also a time of renewal and rebirth. A time to celebrate new life and awakening. This is when we plant seeds to nurture over the coming months, remembering that in order to invite in new energy and opportunities, we must shed old layers, habits, and outdated beliefs.
The spring equinox reminds us that each moment is an opportunity to be born again.
Here are a few ways that you can tune into and work with the vibrant energy of the spring:
1. Spring Clean
This is the perfect time to spring clean your body, your mind, your emotions, and your home – all the things!
Take some time to look within and around you and consider what is old and outdated. What are you holding onto that you no longer need? What old beliefs and emotions are holding you back?
Give yourself this time to let go of things that you no longer need, and move into the season fresh.
2. Symbolically Start Again
Did you know that the astrological year begins on the spring equinox, when the moon moves into Aries? This makes it the perfect time to start again; to start fresh.
If you set intentions at the new year that haven’t quite panned out. Or if you simply feel that this year hasn’t brought you what you had hoped for, this is a great opportunity to “start over.”
What had you hoped to bring forth by March? What hasn’t quite gone according to plan, and what can you do to bring change as you move forward?
The spring is a brand new season, filled with new beginnings that are bursting with potential. Seize this time!
3. Set Some Intentions
You had to know this was coming – intentions are my jammmm!
The whole world around you is filled with the energy of possibility and growth. Tune into that energy to help you grow your ideas, hopes, and dreams.
Remember that wherever you give your attention to will grow, so see your intentions like seeds being planted. Just as the world begins to blossom and grow, so will the seeds of your intentions.
Decide what you want the spring season to bring for you – what do you want to manifest in the coming months? Then set some intentions to get you there. You can create 3-5 affirmations to repeat daily, making sure to state them in the present tense and only contain the positive outcome that you wish to see happen (“I am abundant” vs “I have no debt”).
4. Find Balance in Your Life
Since day and night are of equal length on the equinox, this is a great time to take stock of how balanced your life is.
Check in with your work and home life – do these feel balanced? How much energy are you giving to people who are never there when you need support in return? Are you allowing yourself enough time for you?
This is the perfect time to take a look at all the areas of your life, and find as much balance as you can. Doing so will allow you to move forward into the coming season as a happier, healthier, more balanced version of yourself.
5. Step on the Mat
And of course, some spring equinox yoga is always perfect on the spring equinox. One yoga tradition is to practice 108 sun salutations on this day. If you have the time and energy, it’s a beautiful practice
If, however, you don’t have two hours for 108 sun salutations, a spring equinox yoga practice where you consider the intentions you are planting for the season is also perfect. And that’s exactly what the class below is!
If you’re ready to move with your intentions, then throw on something comfy, unroll you mat, and I’ll meet you there!
